5.0 out of 5 stars Worth it for 'The Zoo' alone., 18 Mar 2002
Whilst the Mikado and the 'Pirates' are regularly done to death, on an annual basis, by every amateur company from Tasmania to Tanzania, the 'less popular' works of G and S remain, for many, undiscovered gems. Such is 'The Sorcerer.' This D'Oyly Carte production is (I believe) the only recording in print. (I don't think the Malcolm Sargent/Pro Arte series for EMI got round to doing this one ). As such it is (literally) incomparable. Coupled with it is 'The Zoo', a collaboration of Sullivan and somebody called Rowe. It dates from 1875 and is contemporaneous with Trial by Jury. Unless you bought the LPs of the Grand Duke then you will never have heard the Zoo before. Quite simply, it is a revelation. It has all the ingredients of a full-scale G and S condensed into 39 minutes and without Gilbert! It makes us wonder 'what might have been?' if Sullivan had worked on a long term project with Rowe rather than Gilbert. If you are replacing your old vinyl or new to G and S then you've got to have it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 9 Oct 2000
By A Customer
This is the only available complete recording of one of the earliest G & S collaborations, and therefore is invaluable to lovers of the Savoy operas. In spite of the previous reviewer's complaints, this opera was never recorded with the dialogue and thus the dialogue could not have been included even if the producers had wanted it that way. Besides, is that any reason to give the recording only 1 star?

For those who buy CD's for the music instead, this one is a real treat. The score contains some lovely things, not least Constance's two arias, the famous patter song, Dr. Daly's numbers, the incantation scene, and the first act finale. Expert Savoyards John Reed, Kenneth Sandford, Donald Adams, and Valerie Masterson are all in top form. David Palmer's Alexis is the one weak spot, but other than that this is essential for Gilbert & Sullivan fans.

1.0 out of 5 stars No dialogue..., 15 May 2000
By A Customer
This is just a friendly warning to anyone else who may desire a copy of the Sorceror. this edition contains none of the dialogue.

Like some of the other recent pressings of the D'Oyly Carte catalog, the dialogue has been excised in favor of a secondary feature, In this case, The Zoo.

Be warned.

On it own merits this is a sparkling, vivacious account of one of the lesser known Savoy scores. Considering that The Sorcerer was not even in the repertoire of the D'Oyly Carte... Read more
