The Coffee cantata was apparently as close as Bach ever got to composing a conventional opera. It is a lighthearted piece about a father's attempts to get his daughter to abandon her addiction to coffee (obviously the bane of 18th century youth).

Generally, you can't go too far wrong with the combination of Emma Kirkby soprano, Christopher Hogwood conductor and the L'Oiseau Lyre label. This version of the Coffee and Peasant Cantatas is no exception. Kirkby is my favourite soprano and here, you feel she is at the peak of her powers. The effortless way she breezes through her arias gives this recording the necessary light and playful tone.

I know why it gets rave reviews in the Penguin books...

Emma Kirkby is simply delightful with totally sympathetic style complemented by Covey-Crump's almost throwaway style.

This recording is light, airy and gay - just as the music was intended.

I cannot give this one more praise - in fact I don't think it could be any better.

Although this recording is quite delightful, it has one great flaw to my taste: Their pronounciation of German is god-awful.
Neither singer knows how to articulate German words, which is the reason why I prefer the more earthy Harnoncourt recording from long ago (vinyl recording).
