Product Description

CD Description

Long before Madonna started changing hairstyles between albums, David Bowie set the standard (and continues to do so) for chameleonic music styles that go beyond mere hair dye. CHANGESBOWIE is the perfect road map that allows the listener to hear the different pitstops Bowie made into the mid-'80s.Throughout the '70s, Bowie's personas included space alien ("Ziggy Stardust", "Suffragette City"), theatrical raconteur("Rebel, Rebel"), blue-eyed soulster ("Young Americans") and Thin White Duke ("Golden Years"). After spending time in Berlin under self-imposed exile ("Heroes"), he returned to the West and within a few short years, David Bowie was back onthe top of the charts thanks to a dance-rock collaboration with Nile Rodgers ("Let's Dance"). Bowie's constant need to reinvent himself is so pervasive that upon originally releasing this collection on Rykodisc, he returned to the studio and recorded an updated, '90s remix of "Fame" that sounds as if Art Of Noise were his back-up band.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still the best introduction to David Bowie's music, 13 May 2003
By Daniel Jolley "darkgenius" (Shelby, North Carolina USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 10 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
When I found myself nursing a desire to really get to know David Bowie’s music a good many years ago, Changesbowie was an obviously natural choice for me – one CD filled to the brim with 16 songs encompassing his entire career up to the point of the compilation album’s release. Rather quickly after giving this disc a spin, I became a Bowie fan. Bowie has always gone his own way, evolving through some really quite weird metamorphoses over the years, but his music has always been consistently good. While I’m not that fond of the track John, I’m Only Dancing, I can honestly say that I enjoy the other 15 tracks almost equally. Space Oddity and Ziggy Stardust are as much fun to listen to as Bluejean and China Girl, and the consistency of the appeal of one man’s music over such a long period of time strikes me as quite extraordinary. One should note that these songs cover a period of time between 1969 and the mid-1980s, although the version of the song Fame included here is a 1990 remix. This album offered the best of both worlds to me as a neophyte Bowie fan, combining the songs I was already familiar with from the 1980s (Fashion, Let’s Dance, China Girl, Modern Love, Bluejean) with some of Bowie’s powerful early material. While I hear some of these older classics on the radio from time to time these days, I was completely unfamiliar with them when I purchased this CD. I have yet to explore Bowie’s early days in any great detail, so I cannot even speculate as to other songs that might have deserved a place on this album. All I know is that Changesbowie gave me a limited yet broadly impressive introduction to the work of a unique musical legend and will lead directly to my eventual purchases of albums from throughout Bowie’s distinguished career. This compilation album remains the best introduction to the body of work Bowie produced in the first decade and a half of his still vibrant career.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good overall picture of Bowie's musical career, 14 Mar 2001
By A Customer
This CD is a fairly essential compilation, especially for the non-collector who isn't compelled to perhaps buy every record Mr Bowie releases but does enjoy his music. I personally prefer the Singles Collection double CD as it contains a slightly wider choice of music. However, this CD is certainly worth the purchase whether you're a long time die-hard like me (and buy things anyway to keep the collection up to date) or just enjoy the mainstream eras of Bowie's music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Reasonable compilation but not the best available, 30 Jun 2000
By A Customer
This album was issued in 1990 and coincided with the reissue of Bowie's back catalogue CD's on EMI and a greatest hits tour. This isn't a bad collection of Bowie's hits and covers both his 70s and 80s work but, because of this coverage and the fact it is limited to one CD, you feel as though you're not really getting anything like the complete picture - a bit like if they chopped the Beatles Red and Blue compilation albums down from 4 CDs to 2! Since 1990 some markedly better Bowie compilations have appeared - namely the Singles Collection double CD set from 1993 and that is the Bowie compilation I would recommend as it contains many more tracks and is a more complete hits package than this one. Still gets 4 stars for some cracking tunes though!
