Things like Nivek Ogre's trademark damaged vocals, and the multiple layering technique, which requires many listens to fully appreciate, laid the groundwork for countless albums from other bands. Released in 1988, VIVIsectVI addresses issues of vivisection, nuclear waste/war, and biological disasters through careful construction of grandiose, nightmare visions. The album also precedes the influence (and ultimate encroachment) of Ministry's Al Jourgenson, and the band's stylistic turn. VIVIsectVI barely even approaches melody, and also features plenty of Skinny Puppy's characteristic film samples, cryptic lyrics, and chainsaw percussion. --Esther Yoon
