cool and relaxed., 26 April 2008
OK, OK! virgin records pulled this from it's release in 1988, and "shelved it" for future release. 20 years on and we are still waiting. I got it on import, and it's really really cool, Boy George gone all soul on us - from the very wonderfully moody Don't Cry, which coincidentally was a Top 50 hit here in the UK, to a track called You Are My Heroin, which is so haunting and laid back it stays in your brain for days!!!!!. This is the album MC Kinky debuted on, on a track called Kipsy, which is full of reggae funk. The album was released in Europe under different titles of Tense Nervous Headache, High Hat, Top Hat or Boyfriend. Don't Take My Mind On A Trip, was released smack in the middle of the trip era, remember that!!!. Whisper should have come out as a single, as should I'm Not Sleeping Anymore. You Found Another Guy, entered the black chart in the USA, and the glorious camp Whether They Like It Or Not, is so tongue tied it'll get you going stir crazy in a second. However this album should of got the release it deserved, should of included No Clause 28 and Live My Life and would of been huge.

Back in the late 80's, Virgin didn't really know what to do with Boy George. From late 1987 to 1989, there was no clear artistic direction. This album is in fact a mixing of two other LPs : Tense Nervous Headache (1988) and Boyfriend (1989). High Hat was released in the USA as Tense Nervous Headache was said to be a poor album. So Virgin US included House tracks on this LP, you'll find these tracks a bit outdated (Do'nt take my mind, Whether they like it or not, You found another Guy) but the other tracks form Tense Nervous Headache are brilliant Pop songs, such as You Are My Heroin (my favourite). Kipsy is a nice Reaggae track with ex-fellow partner Mc Kinky. The smooth Don't Cry is a crooning song, quite unusual for George. Don't hesitate to buy it it is worth having such a CD in your George's collection. But to non-George fans, I would recommend to buy Tense Nervous Headache as it is much more coherent.
