4.0 out of 5 stars Good, flowing interpretation., 18 Oct 2000
By A Customer
After reading a review that damned this interpretation by Simon Rattle I felt I had to come to the defence of this recording, in my humble opinion it is one of the best I have heard as it has more raw energy and feeling than several of the more costly recordings.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sir Simon not at his best, 25 Aug 2000
By A Customer
This should have been one of the best recordings of the Planets yet, but for some reason Sir Simon Rattle's interpretation falls flat. How curious that this should be the first one to appear on a search on Holst.

Being a work that has many many recordings, there are a number that show the work at its best - even the 1920s recording by Holst himself has more life in than this one.

Sir Simon is an excellent champion of 20th century classical music, but it seems that Holst is a mystery to him.

I hope that one day he will have another go, and show us what he really can do.

4.0 out of 5 stars Control, 17 Jun 2008
Even though I'm an Indie/electro kid at heart, I've heard many interpretations of this "pop" classic both live and recorded, and this ranks among the best both from a performance and recording perspective.

The problem is, as this is such a popular classic there are many variations, many of which over do the brass section and sometimes the cacophony of Mars blurting out can be a bit too harsh (this maybe to do with it being performed by smaller orchestra's, or the recording, but I know not of these things).

Yet, the mass of sound generated by the Berliner Philarmoniker means Mars sounds sounds smooth and controlled, yet immense and unstoppable.

My litmus test for The Planet Suite is Saturn: if the last 3 minutes doesn't start to jerk some tears, then it's rubbish. The Berliner pull this off magically in a flawless execution of control and emotion.
