Three Sides Live is one of my favourite albums by probably my favourite band. It is also beautifully presented in this Japanese version with a miniature vinyl album style sleeve. Taken from concerts in 1981, it marks the end of the classic Genesis era, just as they were about to embark on the pop sellout era. The sound is clear and well recorded, the drum sound is superb. I get the feel of live shows with people on stage surrounded by instruments and an audience, rather than the sterility of so many over-produced live albums of later years. The sound is though, paradoxically actually better than that on some of their albums - the abacab and Duke material is clearer and crisper recorded live, showing Genesis as a live performance band rather than the 'progressive' studio boffins they have been accused of being. Ironically, the 4th side is also live material from earlier years (1976-1980), and shows us a little more of the truly classic 70s Genesis material than the first 3 sides. What I would like to know is "Where is the original American version of Three Sides Live that has studio material on the 4th side, from the 'Paperlate'/'3x3' EP, plus B-sides from the Duke era?" In 1983, both versions were available in the UK on double LP. Anyway, if you like great drumming and/or keyboards, then Three Sides Live is for you!
