Zoltan Kelemen is my favourite Pizarro because he puts on aggressive tones in his aria and when he is going to kill Florestan. Jon Vickers has a big voice to show he is heroic. Helga Dernesch is very vulnerable when she determines to risk her life for Florestan. She is also passionate when she tells Rocco that she will not let anyone at all die. This is my favourite "Fidelio" recording.

This is the most beautifully played Fidelio of all, with the Berlin orchestra's superb sound well forward. Karajan is intensely dramatic, occasionally mannered, but this is a superb reading with a good and sometimes great (Vickers) cast.
