5.0 out of 5 stars A memento of lost style, 7 Feb 2001
By A Customer
There is a great deal of nonsense talked about Barbirolli's Elgar. That it is too self- indulgent and that he pulls the tempo about etc etc.

That misses the point. He gets to the heart of ELgar. It is emotional music- too emotional as Elgar said of his own violin concerto - but it needs to be played that way not with detachment.

This record is simply a marvellous experience . The playing has style and commitment of a degree that we have simply lost today. The adagio is a desert island disc.

Cockaigne is in short the best performance ever recorded .

Unmissable

5.0 out of 5 stars I think Barbirolli is best with Elgar's 1st symphony, 19 Nov 2003
By Leonard Bloom "Basque scholar" (Sarasota, FL) - See all my reviews

Yesterday I was reading Gramophone's glowing review in its 2004 catalogue of Boult's rendition of the Elgar 1st symphony. Why is it the publication's first choice among so many other interpretations, including JB's of the same work with the Philharmonia? I cannot find in any Boult recording the same flesh and blood introspection of this mighty symphony, which I do in Barbirolli's versions. I have listened to every recording of the work and every time I come to the same emotional concludion-- I like Barbirolli best in this symphony. He just moves me more than other conductors here.

5.0 out of 5 stars a very great version of a fine symphony, 3 Mar 2007

Unlike Leonard Bloom, I prefer Boult in this symphony, but that is not to say that the Barbirolli version is anything other than magnificent. It is an opulent performance with marvellous detail and some passages of very great beauty, others of great power. Barbirolli has an eye for detail - he used to sit up for hours bowing parts exactly as he wished them - and it tells here. It is also generally a well-judged performance with good balance and contrast and a fine sense of structure on the whole, though there are moments when Barbirolli's tendency to linger, or to get the most out of a passage, impedes the flow (though nothing like as disastrously as in his extrordinarily self-indulgent Brahms symphonies with the Vienna Phil., or to a lesser extent in his Elgar 2, which is simply sluggish in places). Having said that, there is nothing else to niggle about and this is definitely a five-star interpretation. The finest of all, if you can stand some coughing and noise, is Boult's live 1976 Proms performance which was issued inconveniently on a 2-CD Proms set with a book in 1991 or thereby and then reissued last year as an attachment to a BBC Music Magazine. If you can get a copy of that, you have the ideal. This, however, somes very close.
