Having heard Truls Mork recently in Prague - a splendid, exciting,technically excellent performance of the Prokofiev Symphony Concerto for Cello and Orchestra - I bought this CD. It's good, but not, I would say, quite in the top rank of performances of the Dvorak Concerto. It sounds so negative to say there is nothing wrong with it, faint praise indeed, but that's how it seems. The recording is fine, the orchestral support is good (though there are occasional lapses of ensemble with the cellist ; this is not an easy concerto to get spot-on) and the tempi and approach are sympathetic, with one exception. Mork and Janssons observe the conventional extreme slowing-up for the second subject of the first movement. I wish they didn't. It is quite a symphonic movement, and while the tune sounds lovely at the very slow speed, it distorts the shape of the movement, which is a pity. That is why I prefer Rostropovitch's Testament version with Boult over his DGG with Karajan, and if you can hear both,l you may see why. It is perfectly possible to play that tune very beautifully at a flowing tempo, and there is no risk of the music stagnating. On this CD, the Tchaikovsky Variations are given a fine, straightforward performance, as is the Dvorak indeed, but for a definitive recording of the Concerto I look elsewhere.
