The chief advantage of this disc will always of course be the fact that the composer himself is soloist, and as an ardent admirer of the superb music of this genius this remains a serious factor that keeps this disc amongst my absolute favourites. However, for those who want to take a slightly more dispassionate attitude to these recordings there are many features deserving praise in this collection.
The Recorded sound perhaps suffers slightly from having been recorded some time ago (1958 mainly) but remains perfectly adequate and clear throughout the vast majority of the disc (the one rather dissapointing exception being the last of the preludes and fugues at the very end of the disc which sounds as though it has been played on a rather inferior instrument).
The performances are superb throughout, with the electrifying, charged energy on the piano which one would expect from this highly sensitive and nervous man. The climax of the first movement of the second piano concerto in particular is something to behold.
Overall I would recommend this set to anyone with either a long standing interest in the music of Shostakovich, to whom this set will be of invaluable interest in considering the performance intentions of the composer, or to anyone looking for a disc to introduce them to the music of Shostakovich, to whom this set will provide a wide ranging study of the diverse music of this extraordinary compositional talent.
