5.0 out of 5 stars Best M3 since Horenstein & Kubelik, 6 Dec 2007
By Scriabinmahler (Cambridge UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)

Like 7th, Mahler's 3rd is probably the most difficult symphony to conduct as so many shipwrecked recordings show, mostly things go wrong especially in the first and the last movement. Solti and Tennstedt as typical examples. There is no such thing as definitive M3 in the world. But after reading many possitive reviews on Amazon.com, I've discovered this near perfect M3, played by less known Cincinnati O and the conductor, Lopez-Cobos. I was amazed by the orchestra, playing just like Chicago SO or Bavarian Radio SO.

One reviewer on Amazon.com describes this recording passionless. No way! This is certainly most sensitively crafted performance, yet climaxes and outbursts of boisterous sections are immensely powerful without being bombastic. Wood wind and brass are very expressive and bold, played with real feeling in the first movement. Only thing lacking is maybe the certain rough edges and robustness so essential to Mahler's music. DeYoung's rendition of the mysterioso is noble and deeply moving, in fact one of the most poignant renditions among the best mezzo-sopranos in the world. And the last movement? The problematic movement where most of conductors fail. Lopez-Cobos manages to bring out sublime performance of towering stature and depth.

As for the spectacular Telarc sound, the presence and realism of the sound quality is just amazing, and the choruses in the 5th movement are most beautifully captured. They also had a sense to divide the recording in the right place (the last three movements on disc 2). Forget Chailly's cold and clinical DECCA recording or Abbado's politically correct rendition with BPO. This is a great M3 to treasure along side Horenstein, Bernstein, Levine, Haitink, and Kubelik's.
