3.0 out of 5 stars Historic work brought fitfully to life, 16 Sep 2003
By Wilus (Cambridge, UK) - See all my reviews
Parry's Job was a popular repertory piece until the Second World War, and was admired by Adrian Boult and Ralph Vaughan Williams. Nowadays it is remembered if at all as the target of one of Bernard Shaw's most devastating pieces of music criticism. This first commercial recording demonstrates why it provoked such varied reactions. There are inspired passages (the choral lament "Lift up thy voice", the solo "Man that is born of woman" and the glorious sunset of the coda stand out) but also much that is wordy, conventional and laboured. It is possible that in a more sympathetic performance the work might wake up a little more successfully, but Hilary Davan Wetton has none of the grip and conviction that Matthias Bamert brought to his Parry recordings on Chandos. This however is the only recording the work is likely to receive for a good while, and it is undoubtedly of interest to lovers of British music for its anticipations of the greater works of Elgar and Vaughan Williams for which it paved the way.
