This dazzling song cycle about alienation and exile reflects the composer's bitterness on having to leave Germany to flee the Nazis, yet radiates warmth and humanity. The young German baritone Matthias Goerne, surely one of the greatest singers of our time, gives an outstanding performance; his gorgeous voice and extraordinary artistry remind me of the young Hotter. Opportunities to hear such amazing music so beautifully sung are very rare indeed.
