Product Description
From Amazon.com
Grunge angst got old. We wanted to have fun. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy was there, ready with serviceable, pumped-up swing. Their music is straight, uptempo, dance floor jazz. There's nothing particularly original going on, but the sleazy horns and snappy arrangements get the job done. There's nothing campy or tongue-in-cheek either; the music just barrels ahead...like good rock & roll. --Steve Tignor

Description
After the Squirrel Nut Zippers opened up the door with their jazzy, retro-swinging sound, the music industry became a friendly place for zoot-suited, sax-wielding bands like the Cherry Poppin' Daddies, the Flying Neutrinos and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. Though BBVD pay homage to the past with their glib, jumping swing sound, '40s-style horn arrangements and anachronistic lyrics, they definitely have their own agenda. With the exception of an inspired version of Cab Calloway's classic "Minnie The Moocher", all the tunes are original, written by vocalist/guitarist Scotty Morris. This self-titled effort finds the band organising their priorities well, with tight, energetic arrangements and a prevailing sense of humor coming to the fore.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply... incredible, 24 Sep 2002
I heard about this band from the novelisation of 'Never Been Kissed' (of all things) and decided to give them a go. What I heard blew me away. Finally, I have found an album that is absolutely perfect! It's a complete throwback to the classic era of swing and jazz that existed in the fifties - so much better than most of the music around today (I am seventeen, so I'm not being an old fuddy duddy when I say that) - and it's unbelievably fun! My favourite tracks on here have to be Mr Pinstripe Suit, King of Swing and Minnie the Moocher - complete and utter classics. (Anyone else who's reminded of the beginning part of Some Like it Hot?) Sooo... to sum up.... it's amazing. Didn't think it was possible to have this much fun listening to music anymore!

5.0 out of 5 stars ITS SWINGIN' BABY !!!, 19 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Break out your pinstrip suit, winkle pickers and open the cocktail cabinet cos the boys are in town and they really know how to swing!! This is jive hall jazz at its uptempo, upbeat, swingin' best. A definte worthy collection of some of the all time greats including Minnie The Moocher and Go Daddy O - music really doesnt get any better than this. This is compulsive stuff, the kinda beat that gets under your skin and you cant help but toe tap to.

The boys pay homeage to an era in jazz that could easily be described as its finest hour and I would have no hesitation in recommending this recording to any music lover. Check out Mr Pinstripe Suit on track two (my personal favourite), the vocals really do justice to such a golden age in jazz.

SUPERB !!!

5.0 out of 5 stars These hepcats can wail!!!!!!!!!, 29 Jul 2003

I too heard of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy through some other media form - you can see them in action on "Swingers" video/DVD. This CD is just incredible, the perfect accompaniement to a G and T on a balmy evening. Every track is perfection in itself, but together they make one of the most original CDs I have ever had the pleasure of owning. Have also just seen them live for the first time at the Glasgow Barrowland Ballroom - they had the joint jumpin' and no mistake!! Their sound is as good live as it is on disk. Highly, highly recommended - can't sing their praises enough, and if I could, I'd want to sound like the sexy, smooth, velvety tones of Scotty Morris (even though I'm a gal!!).
