Product Description

CD Description

When Aerosmith returned to its original label in the '90s, there were still contractual obligations to Geffen, where they pulled a Lazarus and resurrected their moribund career inthe mid-'80s. A LITTLE SOUTH OF SANITY completes the Geffencycle and unlike most groups who toss together something inorder to move on, Aerosmith took great care in compiling this 2-CD live collection that covers more than 25 years. Recorded during tours for GET A GRIP (1993-94) and NINE LIVES (1997-98), this release also marked a reunion with Jack Douglas, the band's producer during their '70s salad days, who helped the boys from Beantown compile the performances on this collection.
It becomes readily apparent here that Aerosmith still tore it up live regardless of how many power ballads they unleashed on radio since the late '80s. Of course, the Zippo-waving songs are here in abundance ("Crazy", "Angel") alongside ribald double-entendres ("Falling In Love [Is Hard On The Knees]") and vintage material ("Mama Kin"). If 1978's LIVE BOOTLEG gave us Aerosmith at their ripsnorting peak, then SANITY provides a reflection of a classic band that'saged gracefully without losing any of its spark.

4.0 out of 5 stars An on-stage greatest hits, 7 Dec 2002
By A Customer
This is pretty much essential for any Aerosmith fan. Some of the songs included on this double disc recording are a lot better live than in the studio. For example, I would never listen to What It Takes on the Pump album, I just didn't get along with it. However, the simply colossal version on ...Sanity convinced me otherwise, it's a classic.

The same could be said of other songs on this album. Walk This Way, Walk On Down (with Joe Perry on vocals), and the newer Nine Lives material (Falling In Love, and Hole In My Soul) stand out for me, simply because they capture the essence of this stunning rock n' roll band in full flight.

The album isn't without it's weaknesses however. The inclusion of Angel seems like a good idea on paper, but the band play it so damn slow it just seems to drag it's ass like a tired dog. The crowd don't seem to mind, but I think the studio version contains so much more feeling. Was it a screw up on Kramer's (drummer) part? It doesn't matter really, it's a weak track and that's that.

Also, it seems to take Tyler the whole way through Eat The Rich to get warmed up, and his vocals just sound weak. This is rectified by the time the opening bombast of Love in an Elevator shoves it's way into the sound system, but in my opinion it ruins one of my favourite Aerosmith songs of all time. However, Tyler redeems himself later on, and his performance on songs like Dream On and Hole In My Soul had me dubbing him as a tiny god. He truly is a legend.

I've just spent two paragraphs on the album's weaknesses, which is unnecessary really, as it does exude sheer class. The sound quality is excellent, and the mixing is a work of art. I haven't even mentioned Joe (F**kin') Perry's classic guitar work, or the subtle bombast of Hamilton's basswork.

The fact that you get two CDs worth of live material for the price of a single CD album should be enough to convince you to check this out. It's second best only to actually being there, which I will get round to doing one of these days, once Aerosmith get off their butts and do another world tour...

5.0 out of 5 stars The best live... The best album ever, 12 April 2001
By A Customer
You know you're in for something special when you see a double CD live recording of Aerosmith, but you have no idea how special until you listen to it. As soon as you hear the intro to "Eat The Rich" you'll be blown away. The sound quality is awesome, so good in fact that I'd say that each and every song sounds 10 times better live than in the studio, and you can't say that for many bands. Not only that, but you can feel the atmosphere of the audience, but be prepared for confusion, Steve Tyler decides to change a few lyrics for his live performances, hence the explicit content warning on this site. The highlight of the album comes when Steven Tyler and Joe Perry sing a duet of "Mama Kin", it's fast paced, sounds great and is the best thing that this legendary band have done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Live album from the worlds greatest band, 13 Dec 2002
Ah Aerosmith the combination of Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Tom Hamilton, Brad Whitford and Joey Kramer have been rocking now for almost thirty years! Thirty incredible years of rock and roll. They've been at the top, hit rock bottom and climbed back up to reclaim thier title as the greatest band in the world.

So what can you expect from "A Little South of Sanity"? well two words really UTTER GENIUS! The album is fantastic and easily the best live album you will hear. Im sure as fans know the bands new material sounds great but is quite different from the bands work in the 1970s. The album has a fine mix of new and old and is an essential purchase for anyone who enjoys "new" and "old"
Aerosmith.

Ok so the album contains two discs and thirty three songs. The first disc contains newer material from the band (with the exception of "Same Old Song and Dance"). So you get amazing songs such as "Rag Doll", "Angel", "Eat The Rich" and "Janie's Got a Gun". However it is the second disc which I consider to be the better of the two as it contains the classic song such as:
"Mama Kin","Dream On","Sweet Emotion","Last Child" and the stunning "Walk This Way".

The members of the band perform brilliantly throughout. Steven Tyler has an amazing voice. I challenge anyone to listen to "What it Takes" and not think different. Joe Perry is a guitar God and really lets loose on "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)". He even proves his vocal talents by doing a duet with Steven on "Mama Kin" and singing himself on "Walk on Down". The team of Whitford,Kramer and Hamilton are excellent and complete the amazing sound of this excellent band.

So if you like "old" or "new" Aerosmith please buy this excellent album you will not be disapointed.
