4.0 out of 5 stars Can't be pidgeon-holed, 28 Jun 2002
This review is from: Bad Blood (Audio CD)
Is it dub? Is it hip-hop? Is it industrial? Is it grindcore? Believe me, it's seriously difficult to pin down just what this music is that Justin Broadrick (Godflesh, Techno Animal etc) and his partner in crime Kevin Martin (Techno Animal, EAR etc) have managed to produce from their musical blender this time. It's typically bass-heavy, often straying into low-fi dub/hip-hop territory, abrasive and industrial sounding (like a slowed down Godflesh), yet it's strangely melodic (admitedly not on the first listen), with shades of Martins audio experiments with musical visionary Sonic Boom, it's also a cacophany of sound. It grinds, it's got infectious beats made up of anything from sampled drum loops to what sounds like someone beating pots'n'pans to death on their kitchen table.
It's noisy yet it's subtle. There's a funkiness that makes you want to swing your pants at the same time as it makes you want to chill out. It pulls in so many different directions at once you really can't classify this album. Apart from saying it's good. If you like any other Kevin Martin or Justin Broadrick related projects then you need this album.
