5.0 out of 5 stars PVD does it again!, 27 Jul 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Seven Ways (Audio CD)
To begin with, make sure you get the 2CD version of Seven Ways where the second CD has different mixes of the songs on the first - best trance out there - more on a calmer level than a hard trance, its a great change of pace CD

4.0 out of 5 stars The Definitive PVD artist album, 10 Feb 2007
By C. Furey (Donegal, Ireland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Seven Ways (Audio CD)
There are seven ways to solve every problem. Thus speak the sleeve notes of this little recording. I don't know if there are seven ways to solve every problem but there are certainly more than seven ways to discover Paul Van Dyk.The first way?
Seven Ways.
I first discovered Paul Van Dyk through his productions as Visions Of Shiva ( a studio partnership with German music hack and fellow trance lover Cosmic Baby). The singles "Perfect Day" and " How Much Can You Take" are real classics of the trance genre and are still in my all time top ten. Various solo singles followed and an album-"45 RPM" (which includes the sublime original version of "For An Angel";forget the re-released version-this is emotional trance at its best).
However,it was only around the time "Seven Ways" was released that PVD really gained critical recognition-this album (and the singles from it) put him on the musical map outside Berlin and specialist fan circles and brought his music to a wider audience.

The album kicks off with track 1,"Home"- Industrial Berlinesque sounds recede into the background as the musical layers unfold, gently inviting you into Paul's world. This isn't a simple collection of tracks nor is it a mix album. It's somewhere between the two;an audio landscape, perhaps. Each track flows nicely into the next and "Seven Ways" (track 2) is for me,one of Van Dyk's best, if underrated, efforts.
While i won't claim ( unlike some trigger happy reviewers!) that every track will blow you away,i think it's accurate to state that there isn't a bad track on this album.

This is classy, emotional, electronic music. There's no cheese here and at no point does the album disappear up its own posterior either. The singles from this-"Forbidden Fruit","Beautiful Place" and "Words"-are all well worth buying on their own individual merits but there are other quality tracks clamouring for your attention also.

The music builds, rushes, glides to a halt and takes off again in a euphoric sequence of melodies and effects that can be best appreciated as a whole despite the strong individual offerings.
A nice balance has been struck with this album which is never too extreme but well programmed overall.

A word of warning-if you like Paul Van Dyk the DJ,don't expect to hear his live sets replicated here (check him out in a club-i recommend "Amnesia- Ibiza"- instead). This is Paul's vision, his interpretation of what music is all about.

The "45rpm "and "Out There and Back" albums also are worth checking out and "Reflections" has some nice moments but "Seven Ways" is the best album overall and probably the definitive Paul Van Dyk album to date.

This review is based on the one disc version of "Seven Ways".A double cd including remixes is also available as well as the vinyl edition plus a special edition blue vinyl, for which i still owe a certain french girl some cash-hope she's not reading!

I would certainly recommend this if you're interested in Paul Van Dyk's music. Also if you like dancey stuff and more mellow stuff, you'll find a nice balance here.

4.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful mix of chilled out trance with some funky beats!
This is the type of CD you listen to after coming in from clubbing. Van Dyke masterfully mixes squelchy trance with upbeat melodies. Read more
