5.0 out of 5 stars Koussevitzky and Dutton at there very best, 8 Oct 2001
There can't be a trace of doubt: this is the best Koussevitzky CD that money can buy! Compare the Hanson symphony with the same recording reissued on Biddulph (# WHL044) and you'll realize that Michael Dutton is a true miracle worker. No rustle and hiss and no crackle and clicks here. Does the Biddulph CD calls for some tolerance, Dutton makes listening to this old monaural recording an unparallelled experience (even if a headphone is used). The recorded sound dates from 1940 but is most spectacular and the frequency range is as full as one can desire. But this is not only Dutton at his very best. It's also Koussevitzky at his best. This performance of Hanson's wonderful third symphony is a marvel in comparison with the composer's own 1963 stereo recording available on Mercury (#434 302-2) and so very superior to Gerard Schwarz's on Delos (#3092). This is the one to order! Copland's Appalachian Spring and Lincoln Portrait are also top drawer and, recorded a few years later, equally stunning.
