Popp on Song, 5 Oct 2002
This CD contains a variety of operatic arias, all of which show off Popp's voice at it's best. Noted as a Mozartian soprano, this is reflected in the inclusion of arias from Die Zauberflote and Le Nozze di Figaro, both of which are sung exceptionally well with the great tone and vocal precision expected of Popp. More interestingly are the other arias on this album, representing Popp's diverse repetoire. From the standard "O Mio Babbino Caro", a mainstay of many a soprano, to the likes of Massenet, Verdi, Charpentier, Weber, Goetz and composers from her homeland, Smetana and Dvorak, Popp delivers exquisite performances throughout. Highlights, however, must be her hauntingly beautiful rendition of Dvorak's "O Silver Moon", sung in the original Czech, which I am yet to hear bettered by any other soprano, and Agathe's aria from Weber's Die Freischutz, "Wie Nahte Mir Die Schlummer", which shows the great control and range of voice that Popp possesses, whilst still managing to maintain a highly emotional intensity. This CD is exceptional value for money and with such a variety of composers represented, there should be something to please all those who appreciate the soprano voice.
