the greatest film composer of the late 20th century is without doubt, ennio morricone. but jerry goldsmith comes a very strong second. while morricone has many 'original' compilations on the market, although near impossible to find. sadly goldsmith has very few, if any at all, comprising of his film themes. which is why we must take our hats off to silva screen for at least compiling 'some' of the great mans work. The title of this CD, along with many other Silva Screen albums, is misleading. This is not the 'essential' Jerry Goldsmith collection, as some of his better compositions are omitted, like Papillon, Planet of the Apes and poltergeist. some tracks are incidental compositions included to bump up the discs.
But there are still some outstanding tracks like blue max, patton and the excellent underfire. albeit not the original recordings, but silva screen cannot be faulted for their interpretations of major film works.
