Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Most famous for his collaborations with film director Peter Greenaway, Michael Nyman is a thoroughly modern composer, at home with concerto form, a film score or an arrangement of baroque song. Indeed, Where the Bee Dances for saxophone and orchestra is a single-movement concerto, the title derived from one of Puck's songs from Shakespeare's The Tempest. More than that, Nyman makes occasional reference to his score for Prospero's Books, Greenaway's radical reworking of the play. Saxophonist Simon Haram acquits himself with great virtuosity, aptly taking flight through the ever-changing directions of this busily buzzing, free-flowing rhapsody. Maintaining the connection with cinema, The Piano Concerto is a four-movement expansion and development of themes from Jane Campion's highly acclaimed film, The Piano. This is a defiantly romantic concerto full of grand gestures, epic melodies and the swirling storm clouds of a heart at sea with unresolved passion. Inevitable comparison must be made with the composer's own recording, coupled with the thrillingly dynamic MGV. There, Kathryn Stott is perhaps a little warmer, this recording's John Lenehan having a slightly more forward rhythmic edge. However, the contrasting versions offer many pleasures, each a joyous affirmation that the modern concert hall can still accommodate an uplifting spirit of romance. --Gary S. Dalkin

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Nyman, but basically a rework of his Piano soundtrack., 30 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Another distinctly Nyman sound providing a new work with his first track. This makes for interesting and enjoyable listening, although doesn't feel as emotioningly deep as many of his other music.

The other four tracks take their themes directly from 'The Piano' soundtrack, but here Nyman has managed to add even more feeling to them. I found this quite surprising, thinking the originals were fantastic, however the use of extra instruments has been made to great effect. This results in creating a worthwhile addition to your Nyman collection if you already have one. However if you don't, go and buy The Piano soundtrack. If you already own The Piano (but nothing else) then take a look at his other works first (particularly The Draughtman's Contract) and think about buying this only if you are seriously getting into Nyman's unique style.

Overall, another great piece of Michael Nyman.
