This concert performance was recorded at the Opera de Marseilles in 1995. Most film music concerts will rattle off some predictable popular classics. Here those are:
Raiders Of The Lost Ark,
Gone With The Wind, James Bond and
Lawrence of Arabia. Where the similarities end, however, is in this recording's bright arrangements which often segue into something completely different. The medleys chosen by composer and conductor Lalo Schifrin are a genuine pleasure. There's a Western blend of
High Noon,
The Magnificent Seven and
The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly; a classics mix of
The Third Man,
Doctor Zhivago and
Zorba The Greek; and there's a wonderful songs medley performed by Julia Migenes and Dee Dee Bridgewater--each outdoing the other through
Butch and Sundance,
Bagdad Café,
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, and many more. There aren't that many concerts of movie music: this deserves to be a template for anyone who's thinking about putting one on.
