Johan de Meij's 1st symphony, "Lord of the Rings" is nothing whatever to do with the film music. It is a series of character studies and scenic evocations based on the books. It is a masterpiece from start to finish, with gripping sounds and a wonderful structural integrity. It is a hard play for all sections [I have played it with the Yorkshire Wind Orchestra] and it needs a very firm hand on the tiller. Happily, it has one here. The wind band/orchestra with large percussion section are excellent indeed, and are very well recorded in a warm yet clear acoustic.The fillers are fine, especially, in my view, the final one, but no-one will buy this for the fillers, but for the main feature. Rich, lustrous sounds, darkness and eerie corners, strange beings, triumph, passion and renewing fire, they're all there in the de Meij work.
