Product Description

CD Description
Recorded live in Canada in 1972, FIRST GIRL I LOVED represents The Incredible String Band in the group's final creativephase. Clarinet and keyboard player Gerard Dott had just joined the band at the time of this recording, and the band had just finished up work on its NO RUINOUS FEUD album. The set draws from that release, as well as from selections--including the enduring title track--that span The Incredible String Band's career. Included on the disc is Mike Heron's 20-minute-plus "Ithkos", which took up a full side on their finalalbum, HARD ROPE & SILKEN TWINE. The band at this point wasemploying more drums and electric instruments. They were asengaging as ever playing at a greater volume, which the excellent sound quality of this recording helps make evident. It's a testament to the ongoing allure of this unique ensemble that more than 25 years after they disbanded, FIRST GIRL ILOVED finally saw the light of day.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but not Incredible, 8 Feb 2001

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Any live recording by the ISB is going to be worth listening to, but this CD should be approached with caution by anyone with a special fondness for the early, magical days of the String Band when boundaries were being broken and anything seemed possible. These latter-day recordings reveal a musically competent unit which was sadly past its sell-by date in terms of creativity and originality. It does have its moments, of course - "Cousin Caterpillar" gets a robust re-working and "The Circle is Unbroken" is as thrilling as ever, and "Ithkos" sounds very fine in the live setting for which it was always intended. Overall, however, the feeling is of disappointment - its so sad that a band as wonderful as the ISB should sound as if they are merely going through the motions, but ultimately that's how it was towards the end. Robin was soon to leave the band and re-invent himself as a celtic minstrel with his Merry Band, while Mike made his bid for rock stardom with Reputation...but those are different stories. This CD remains a must-have for completists, but anyone with a casual interest in the String Band should look instead to the early classics: "5000 Spirits", "Hangman's" and "Wee Tam & the Big Huge".
