I think this is a good anthology of Saxophone music in a classical context, and by that I don't mean arrangements of things like Mozart or Bach and so on; I mean music written for the Sax. The Ibert is particularly good because it does play to the more "jazzy" strengths of the Saxophone timbre, whilst keeping a more classical structure in terms of orchestration and composition. An interesting and enjoyable addition to your collection if you decide to have a foray into Classical Sax, especially at the bargain price and given the great performances.

I may have missed the point. Or I might be better off sticking to Jazz. But this album is an odd one on a good day - and downright suicidal and depressing on a dark, cold, rainy winter day!! Listening to Mahler or Wagner is like a mild summer rain in comparison!! The music itself (i.e. the playing of the instruments) is spot on, especially the second half of the album, but I was not aware of the composers' tendency to be melancholic! I have heard Sax versions of Mozart and Beethoven pieces and they were grand. And I am now looking at Ballads for Saxophone and Orchestra or Romances for Saxophone.
If you are looking for pleasant, light listening, do not get this album!
