Overall it is a great opera with excellent arias for the female voices. I bought this recording after having attended a concert performance at the Barbican, which had Simone Kermes as Melissa, the sorceress. WOW, that was amazing! To my disappointment, Eiddwen Harrhy is no way near Simone Kermes. Her wobbly insecure voice (which I confirmed in other recordings, such as Radamisto with J.Baker and Alcina with A.Auger) makes me wonder why this singer recorded anything at all... she is not at the same league. In the famous aria 'Destero dall'empia Dite', it is a real disaster, if you compare to Kiri Te Kanawa's excellent recording. Contrary to other reviews, Jennifer Smith is all right, she is not the one that should have been voted out!!!

'Amadigi' is an excellent early opera from Handel. Interesting in that there are only four main roles, there are many wonderful arias and a fairly convincing plot involving knights and magic. This is another early recording from Minkowski before he began to mess around with tempo too much and the Musiciens du Louvre play beautifully. In the title role, Nathalie Stutzmann is simply fantastic - it's good to see this fine contralto making a bit of a comeback recently in Vivaldi recordings! Just as excellent is Bernarda Fink in the role of friend and rival Dardano - the aria 'Tu mia speranza' is particularly weird and exciting. Eidwenn Harrhy is suitably vigorous as the sorceress Medea. The only weak link in my opinion is Jennifer Smith as love interest Oriana; perhaps I am just allergic to this soprano but I have never understood why she was cast in so many recordings around this time - to me the voice always sounds too sour. In general though this recording is highly recommended.
