5.0 out of 5 stars The original version of the Fripp/Sylvian live album, 29 Jul 2003
By Jason Parkes "We're all Frankies'" (Worcester, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 10 REVIEWER)
Originally issued in 1994 Damage was a live album culled from Fripp&Sylvian's 'The Road to Graceland' tour in 1993; I was lucky enough to get a copy of it in the lovely box with 32 page colour booklet and 24 carat gold CD. It appears that this was more the Fripp side of things, as Damage was reissued in 2001 a la Sylvian- with different artwork, the epic Darshan traded for Jean the Birdman (a much better idea in retrospect) & a slightly altered running order. Plus Sylvian tailored the mix to his own tastes; either way they're both worth having- both superior to the so-so Fripp/Sylvian studio album The First Day (1993).

The five-piece band, including Michael Brook, Trey Gunn & Pat Mastelotto alongside F&S, offer a much better take on First Day and earlier pertinent material. Songs like Firepower and First Day-outtake Blinding Light of Heaven really come to life here- though Darshan (the road to graceland) remains the kind of song that's interesting to watch live, but perhaps not to listen to?

Blinding Light of Heaven is one of the tracks that for reasons known to themselves, were not included on The First Day- as Jean the Birdman b-sides Earthbound, Starblind & Endgame (two of my absolute faves) & the bookending ballads Damage and The First Day here. Damage is particularly wonderful & is reason alone to buy this album in either format.

It's nice to hear Sylvian rock out a bit- which he had veered away from in the mid80s for the most part- First Day songs like Brightness Falls & 20th Century Dreaming are wonderfully robust. Sylvian also revisits the past, with a sublime take on Rain Tree Crow's Every Colour You Are, which is superior to the studio take & three tracks from 1986's double album Gone to Earth which featured Fripp. Gone to Earth itself was composed by Fripp and Sylvian and is much better here, especially when it drifts into 20th Century Dreaming- itself not far from the jazz-rock sounds of The Mahivishnu Orchestra or Weather Report (or Radiohead for that matter!)Even more wonderful is the subsequent GTE tracks Wave and Riverman, the former an achingly divine ballad driven by Fripp's guitars which are as wonderful here as they are on any other classic he's played on.

This version of Damage is well worth tracking down, as is the Jean the Birdman double-single; I'm not sure if its better than the 2001 reissue, as I love both equally. A classic live album whichever way you look at it...and not as pointless as Japan's Oil on Canvas, which was just a dry recreation of the studio tracks!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sylvian and Fripp Come To Life, 27 Jun 2003
This is a suberb album. Unlike many live albums this offers a truly fresh on Sylvian's material along with two new songs. Whereas his studio work can be described as cold and experimental this is warm and organic. The amazing band (including Trey Gunn, Michael Brooks and Pat Mastellotto) are plainly listening to each other. Much of this really grooves and the solos are always appropriate. In fact this album contains some of Fripp's most inspired work, the more groove based material leaving room to stretch out
