Amazon.co.uk Review

It didn't have a name, this new sound that Mike Scott was hearing in his head, so he called it The Big Music. This, it turns out, was something of an understatement. If Icarus had access to a recording studio, the ensuing result may have sounded like This Is The Sea--nine songs almost entirely unified by one man's desire to transcend his mortality. As you can imagine, it's an intense affair. Anthony Thistlethwaite's celestial sax playing seems to duel constantly with Scott's impassioned exhortations--to stunning effect on "Medicine Bow" and "Don't Bang The Drum". In the hands of most artists, such ambition would only result in grand folly. As "The Whole Of The Moon"--the most famous track on this album--emphasises though, there was something truly visionary about Scott at this time. To spend any time with This Is The Sea is to feel an entire Glastonbury of goose pimples take place on your spine. --Peter Paphides

CD Description

Released in 1985, THIS IS THE SEA stands as the Waterboys' most ambitious and impressive record. The Scottish band takes the majestic, Phil Spector-influenced "Big Sound" of the era, and applies it to grand tales of the ocean and the countryside. While singer/songwriter Mike Scott's plaintive vocals and cinematic lyrics are prominent, the album's shimmeringproduction also showcases the bold layers of instrumentation and lush arrangements. "The Whole of the Moon" spotlights the regal keyboard lines of Karl Wallinger (who would soon leave to form World Party), providing a nice contrast to moodier tracks such as "The Pan Within", a mythology-heavy song that glides along on a slinky melody, and "Medicine Bow", anurgent, expansive guitar-fueled rocker. Scott masterfully caps off the album with the jangling title track, evoking a glorious sense of liberation while sailing into the sunset. (Note: The 2004 reissue of THIS IS THE SEA includes an outstanding bonus disc that culls 14 tracks from Scott's archives, and features a bevy of previously unreleased songs.)

5.0 out of 5 stars The definitive Waterboys album, 9 Jan 2000
By sean_miller@mindless.com (Glastonbury, Somerset) - See all my reviews
The Waterboys were formed as a band by Mike Scott in the early eighties and immediately started forging a sound that would develop through two albums to become the leading edge of mid-eighties Celtic rock. "This is the Sea" is the culmination of this period of the band's development, a period that was cut short by Scott's move to Ireland and the subsequent change in direction.

"The Whole of the Moon" is probably the most successful song that the band has had to date, but on this album it is simply one of many dark forays into myths and legends. The powerful simplicity of "Spirit", the damning indictment of Thatcher's Britain in "Old England", the summing up of the Cold War in "Be my enemy" - it's all there. Coupled with love songs like "Trumpets" this is a powerful album and an album which makes you wonder where the band would have gone had fate had different things in store for them.

Thoroughly recommended! Buy it.
