I suppose if you are looking at this then you are pretty well familiar with the twisted genius of Devin Townsend's none SYL work...but if you are looking outside SYL for the first time, this is a good a place to start as any.
The first thing to say is that the title 'Ocean Machine' really is reflected in the songs, there is a sort of feel that you could be listening to a sound track to some mental futuristic under water film!!! And no, that doesn't mean there are crashing wave sounds between the tracks. Devin just seems to find the essence of something, no matter what subtlety it is that you and I would never grasp, and then weave it through the songs. And these are SONGS- the sort of flowing through different types of madness of work like Infinity is less apparent, although there are times mid album where this feel comes in as the songs flow from one to another, but there are definate, well structured songs that will appeal to a large number of music fans, and not just those within 'metal.' I challenge anyone to listen 'Life' and not come away singing the last chorus...you just can't help it, it delves in and grabs you right at the centre...
Highlights are 'Seventh Wave,' 'Life,' 'Night' and live favourite 'Regulator'- amazing songs that keep you coming back and of which you never tire...I short, another work of twisted genius from Dev!!!!
