2.0 out of 5 stars ...in which 60s hippies get to grips with the electronic 80s, 2 Mar 2001
By A Customer
Some discographies forget the Edgar Broughton Band's last studio album (so far). Those fans that heard it back in 1982 were puzzled by the synthesizers and electronics, and by the apocalyptic vision of a world ruled by a Superchip implanted beneath every person's skin. Now reissued, it's safe to say it doesn't really work. There are quite a few good moments, but the band never quite got to grips with a musical style that hasn't lasted the test of time anyway. In fact, the best parts are new: The Virus and the secret track were both recorded in 1997 for the reissue, and are a tantalising glimpse of how the eternal hippies might sound if they decided to pursue electronic music again. What HAS lasted the test of time is this concept album's vision of a population kept docile and happy by the Superchip. The Superchip has arrived, only it's in your computer, and there you sit right now, docile and happy, reading this. Don't riot, surf!

In fact, the best parts are new: The Virus and the secret track were both recorded in 1997 for the reissue, with substantial input from Edgar's son Luke, and are a tantalising glimpse of how the eternal hippies might sound if they decided to pursue electronic music again. What HAS lasted the test of time is this concept album's vision of a population kept docile and happy by the Superchip.
