5.0 out of 5 stars At last, something 'French' worth listening to !, 20 Jan 2001
By A Customer
I heard this album in Paris a few years ago and rushed straight out to the nearest shop to get it. I was not disappionted. A mixture of ancient & modern in the same ilk as Enya and Oldfield.... I would suggest that if you enjoyed this album, you check out the French language film 'Les Visiteurs' staring Jean Reno, which was the biggest grossing French comedy film of all time (and as far as I know, still is). The soundtrack for the film was written by Eric Levi too and in the same style as found on ERA. In fact, some of the music of the OST and on ERA are very similar, especially the 'Ameno' tracks (These were also released as a CD single at the same time as the ERA album was out in France). Looking at Amazon's sister site in France, it looks like Levi has been working on a new album and that Era 2 is out in France. I hope it is not too long before it crosses the channel !

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing., 31 May 2001
By A Customer
I first heard of Era in an advertisement on French television. I liked it immediately and went off to buy it, but could not find it anywhere. I finally succeeded in a large record store in Germany some time later, on a different voyage. The CD was worth the wait though. It is completely different from most music, be it classical, modern, celtic, latin... A mixture of all of the above with both pleasant and exciting tracks, it makes for good music for all sorts of situations, be it simply for listening to, background music, or even alternative soundtracks to computer games: A definite success.

3.0 out of 5 stars Music fan..., 17 Dec 2001
Era is one of those types of albums where you listen to it the first time and you like two songs. Listen to it a second time and you find you quite enjoy some more tracks. Eventually, you find that you're not skipping any tracks and you're playing it as often as possible. It is composed, produced and arranged by a French composer named Eric Levi.
The album seems to have a very medieval approach to it (from the booklet and arrangement). However this is medieval with dance drums (similar to Sadeness drumbeats sometimes). What really appeals to me is that it uses a very powerful choir on all the tracks. They add an ominous tone to the album and take you through many emotions (sadness, joy and triumph).
The remix of Ameno is in my opinion the best song on the album and everyone who likes Enigma must listen to this song (or buy the single if possible). I never thought I'd say that a remix is better than the original but this time the rule is broken.
However, what is disappointing about this Era album, is the use of electric guitar and English vocals. I have never personally enjoyed the electric guitar in Enigmatic groups as it is a very harsh instrument, more akin to a rock group. I think Era would have benefited more if the guitar was replaced with a grand piano or cello, playing the same melody. The electric guitar shatters the atmosphere of being in the Dark Ages and monasteries. Also the English vocals are sometimes distracting, and make some of the songs too pop-orientated. However, there are many gems on this album and it has become one of my favourites.
