4.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgic Sound Bites, 9 Jan 2004
By Rick "rick_in_tas" (Tasmania, Australia) - See all my reviews
The sixties was a magical era, and one of the magical elements was the pirate radio station. The stuffy BBC did not have all the latest sounds played by the offshore transmitters of Radio Caroline and Radio London, and the pirates were ardently listened to by the youth of the nation.

Part of the magic was the "jingle", usually a few seconds of music which reminded the listener which station they were tuned into. The were short, snappy and added a lot to the flavour of the era. The Who certainly thought so when they added a few pirate jingles on their "Who Sell Out" album.

This CD brings together a very comprehensive collection of the original jingles. Radios Caroline and London feature prominently, with a few of the more memorable ones from the smaller stations such as Radio England. Most are CD quality, too, so you don't have to filter out the static anymore!

It's not a CD that you would buy as an hour's worth of entertainment (as so many of them sound pretty similar) but it's so good to hear them all again. There are a few that are missing, the "You're a pussycat..." jingle from London for example, but there are many more to enjoy.

I would imagine those who like to put together the odd collection of sixties classics could do no better than to add a few of these musical spices to the mix!
