5.0 out of 5 stars most underrated band of its era, 30 Sep 2001
By A Customer
Ruts were a band way ahead of their time. Bands like Nirvana seem to have picked up, ironically, from where this band's future was cut short: the death of its vocalist. Each song on Crack is strong and powerful and proof of the musical ability Ruts were renowned for. The order of the songs (pure genius, if deliberate) takes the listener on a rough journey through an urban landscape, from the raw punk of "Something that I said" through the menace of "It was cold" and the contemplativeness of "Jah Wars" to the sheer live climax of "Human Punk". After all these years it still sounds fresh and important. A perfect album indeed, that moves way beyond the boundaries of the era it was created in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still the greatest album of all time, 29 Jan 2005
By Neil Munday (Castle Donington) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I know it's a strong claim to make but this album stands up to anything today. Musically, the band were light years ahead of their peers and it shows on the whole of this album, especially SUS and It Was Cold. The first band I ever saw in 1979 and it will remain one of my greatest memories.

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the top 10 punk records of all times, 27 Nov 2001
By A Customer
I first listened to this record in 1980 and it is amazing how well this record has stood the test of time. Even today they run circles around most bands that pass as "punk". Awesome playing, totally rocking and powerful punk and a good dosage of reggae-influences make this an all time classic. This LP and the pre "Grin And Bear It" singles are all you should look for by the band. Take a pass on the RUTS D.C. stuff (which is still decent). Of course it is better to have this on vinyl... but oh well.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not brilliant
For the first 7 tracks, I was a bit disappointed- not as punky as I'd thought, bit too metally. Then I heard Jah war... Excellent song. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars The most musically talented punk band ever.
The Ruts managed to put pundits of 'Punks cant play' in there place. All of the musicians on this album were top class. The lyrics were sharp, and the pace full on. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful punk/reggae Album
a superb album and a sad loss to music that the death of messr: Owen cut the output of songs short or the Ruts would have been around for many years producing great quality music
