4.0 out of 5 stars Carol hold the ladder steady, 28 Oct 2004

It's been a sad thing Carol never got the attention she deserved.
Only the summer hit -James hold the ladder steady- brought some attention to Carol. Why she never hit the right point? It puzzles me.
Perhaps she sticks to long by the same manager. This CD is for the Deene fans. Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Forgotten British singer of the early sixties, 18 April 2003
Five minor hit singles (only four if you look in the Guiness book) do not do justice to Carol, who clearly had a lot of fun making music. Many of her songs were covers of American songs, as was the custom back then, but Carol’s versions were every bit as good as the American originals.

Carol did not get to select the songs she recorded, but her manager clearly liked Sue Thompson, as Carol recorded three of her songs – Sad movies, Norman and James hold the ladder steady. Carol also covered Johnny get angry (Joanie Sommers). Those provided four of Carol’s hits despite competition from the original versions, which also charted. Her other hit, Some people, was a British song. Although it was also a cover, it charted higher than the original version.

It might have been better for Carol’s career had she been given original material to record, but she continued to record covers, including Let me do it my way (Jo-Ann Campbell), I want to stay here (Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme) and Who’s been sleeping in my bed (Linda Scott), all of which failed to chart. Carol eventually got a new manager but just when things started looking better, she was badly injured in a road accident. Although she eventually recovered, her career didn’t.

This, then, is a collection of superb music by a brilliant singer who didn’t quite make it big on record, although she was popular on TV and radio.
