Amazon.co.uk Review
"In the early 1960s",recalled Burt Bacharach, "there were hundreds of singers in New York. Dionne Warwick was different, though." Different she may have been, but it was a while before the legendary songwriting duo gave Warwick her first big international hit with "Anyone Who Had A Heart". Indeed, legend has it that Warwick's "Don't Make Me Over" was written after Hal David remembered her saying those words to him in annoyance at not being given the duo's best songs. This collection then, might be seen as a chance for Warwick to turn back time, as she wraps her vocal cords around a whole load of Bacharach and David material she didn't land first time around: "Alfie", "Trains And Boats And Planes", and "The Look Of Love" line up alongside material more usually associated with Warwick. And you can see why Bacharach and David both continue to cite her as the best vocalist they've ever worked with: all the qualities that draw folk to Bacharach and David canon--their reflective nature, their wit and their jazz-tinged intuition for rhythm--are just as attributable to Warwick herself. Sublime stuff. --Peter Paphides

CD Description
If you have any interest at all in sophisticated pop music, you need to hear this remastered 22-track compilation of Dionne Warwick's original '60s singles written, arranged, and produced by Burt Bacharach with the invaluable lyrical contributions of Hal David. Bacharach and David received a long-overdue critical reappraisal in the mid-to late-'90s, and their work with Warwick's sublime, pure pop voice has regained the status it richly deserves.
This 2000 release lacks a few vital pieces, notably Warwick's first Bacharach/David hit, the atypically funky "Don't Make Me Over". But overall, it's an exquisite introduction to both one of the finest songwriting teams in pop history and, more importantly, to one of their finest interpreters.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great singer, two great songwriters, 20 great songs, 16 Mar 2003
Burt Bacharach and Hal David are arguably one of the greatest songwriting pairings ever, writing spritely heartfelt missives which have become classics. Although recorded by artists ranging from The Walker Brothers to The Carpenters to Tom Jones, and by Burt himself (very ill-advised, the man can't sing for fudge), they are most famously delivered by Dionne Warwick. This collection features not only some of her classic recordings, but also tracks she had never previously performed.

I'll Never Fall In Love Again is perhaps the greatest of all, although Walk On By, Make It Easy On Yourself (as recently sampled by Irish band Ash) and I Say A Little Prayer run it close. The covers are all up to standard, and almost all the tracks are brilliant - I alwas found Do You KNow the Way To San Jose? irritating, but many people love it. A few great songs aren't featured - I'd've loved to hear Dionne take on They Long To Be Close To You, and its a shame to be reminded that the amazing Heartbreaker wasn't a Bacharach and David number, but this CD is still a must.

4.0 out of 5 stars Honeyed vocals combined with rhythmic heat, 3 Jul 2001
By hollysmith56@yahoo.com (Dorset, England) - See all my reviews
Warwick's honeyed vocals contrast very effectively with the latin american rhythm patterns within this album. The combination of rhythmic heat and menthol cool vocals prove irresistable in the hugely successful hits such as 'I say a little prayer', 'Walk on by' and 'Do you know the way to San Jose'. You only have to count the numerous cover versions to appreciate the influence that Warwick has had on the music industry. When it comes to partners in musical perfection Dionne Warwick, Burt Bacharach and Hal David remain in a class of their own. A thouroughly uplifting album, well worth a listen!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Classy classics you'll be tapping anything available to, 9 Nov 2000
By A Customer
I may not have been around when these songs were charting, but yet I know pretty much all of them to sing along to. There are maybe two or three fillers amongst 22 tracks - but all of them are sublimely sung. Dionne Warwick's voice is cool yet exciting, and you just have to warble with the backing singers. Bacharach sure wrote some fantastically irresistable rhythms that work today - you can tell this by the number of these songs that have been covered by the trendies over the last ten years.

At this price, how can your dinner parties be without this definitive bit of pop history?
