4.0 out of 5 stars A Haunting Look Into Emotional Uncertainty, 11 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Portishead, from Bristol, in 1994 completed the masterpiece "Dummy", melding decks, moogs and the beautiful voice of Beth Gibbons. Portishead here return with Over, one of the singles of their self titled album. It ia dark and uncertain prospect, with an edge of desperation throughout. Yet it is its isolation of instruments and of Beth's lyrics" This uncertainty is taking me over" which create a ghostly musical image. The acoustic guitar at the start seems to drift into nothingness, until layered by Beth's skeletal vocals. Later we are brought into anger as the cutting decks and drums scar the silence. In short, although difficult listening, Portishead, unlike any other band, offer you into their own world, a beautiful yet desolate winter of discontent.
