The 1932 Paul Whiteman recording of Ferde Grofe's "Grand Canyon Suite" is wonderful to hear, and the Pearl label fidelity is more than satisfactory. To those familiar with the modern, greatly-expanded orchestration of this piece (which dates from around 1939, I believe), this "concert orchestra" version may sound quaint, but there is more than mere historical interest here. The final movement, "Cloudburst," is particularly powerful here, with brass and reeds predominating, and "The Painted Desert" is as mysterioso in this small orchestral setting as in later, "hi-fi" readings by Eugene Ormandy and Howard Hanson. I can finally get rid of my cumbersome 78-rpm set of this recording. A gem.
