Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

There was a nice way of incorporating music into this film's humour. Composer Jonathan Richman kept appearing on-screen (first of all in a tree) to sing a ditty. It had the effect of making it seem like a tongue-in-cheek fairy tale. There are three of the songs here, with the last ("Let Her Go Into the Darkness") being an unexpected assassination attempt on him--his singing isn't that bad! The inclusion of "Mary's Prayer" by Danny Wilson shows a sense of humour in the Music Supervision department. It's used for a dreamy montage, and is enormously cheesy. A couple of classics suggest an ear for the peculiar, such as "Margo's Waltz" (Lloyd Cole) and "Build Me Up Buttercup" (The Foundations). Something like "Is She Really Going Out With Him" (Joe Jackson) is included to encapsulate half the plot for anyone not paying attention. Amongst the more recently penned songs is the best thing The Propellerheads ever wrote--"History Repeating". Many comedy albums think it's essential to do the jokes to death with dialogue tracks, but thankfully there are none here. --Paul Tonks

5.0 out of 5 stars Classical film ..... classic album, 25 April 2001
By chuffy99@aol.com (Peterborough, Cambs) - See all my reviews
This is a brilliant album. An amazing collection of established and original songs which will make you laugh almost as much as the film did. Songs such as 'Build Me Up Buttercup', 'Is She Really Going Out With Him' and 'Mary's Prayer' are all here alongside new songs from the film like Jonathon Richman's 'True Love Is Not Nice'. I have seen films with original songs that just bomb...but here they really work.

I would recommend this album to everyone who appreciates classic feel good songs - even if you haven't seen the film.

P.S. If you haven't seen the film....get out there and rent it!!

3.0 out of 5 stars I bought this for only one song..., 23 Jun 2003
This was the only album that I knew of that contained 'Mary's Prayer' by Danny Wilson - a serious throwback to the 80's. So I bought it, and found several other great songs into the bargain. Great film, great soundtrack.

2.0 out of 5 stars Oh dear, 9 Aug 2003
Somehow the music fitted the movie, yet the CD doesnt seem to. The only high spots here for me are Mary's Prayer by Danny Wilson (which was released when I was 21 so I remember it well) and History Repeating, by Propellerheads and someone I usually cant bear at all, Shirley Bassey. Buy it if you LOVED the movie with a passion. If not, by a Danny Wilson CD.
