Product Description

CD Description

CRACKLE is the second of Bauhaus' greatest-hits albums, following the import-only 1979-1983. The major difference between the two sets is that CRACKLE eliminates most of the coverversions that appeared on the earlier collection. The tracklisting draws from Bauhaus' entire career-from the definingfirst single, "Bela Lugosi's Dead", all the way through "She's In Parties" and the title track of the band's final album, BURNING FROM THE INSIDE. All tracks have been remastered. This is especially evident on the band's earliest work. "Dark Entries" and "Double Dare" are afforded a cleaner sound, adding to their power.
The lone cover included is a version of "Ziggy Stardust", a David Bowie classic that clearly influenced the band. Though they will always be labeled as founding forefathers of the "Goth" rock movement, Bauhaus werenever constrained by the label. "Terror Couple Kill Colonel" features a gentle, swaying groove. "Silent Hedges" is built on a foundation of acoustic guitar and a chunky, distortedbass line. "Spirit" features dueling guitars and a harpsichord. The collection concludes with one of the band's most emotive tracks, "Crowds", a pretty piano-based song wherein tortured vocalist Peter Murphy wonders "What do you want of me?"

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Goth..., 17 May 2004
By Richard Kelly (Manchester, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Bauhaus breezed onto the music scene in 1979 and were instantly derided as being passe and harking back to earlier David Bowie material. What was missed at the time as that a new Genre of music was germinating from the seeds that David J, Daniel Ash, Kevin Haskins and Peter Murphy were planting.

Listening to these tracks again it is surprising how fresh they are and how well the music stands up to modern comparison. The vocals of Murhpy range from gloriously languid to demonic screams. Daniel Ash coaxs all sorts from noises from his guitar. David J is pounding on the bass. Kevin Haskins is tribal on drums.

These tracks have defined the Gothic music scene for over 20 years now. If you want to see where it all started listen to Bela Lugosi's Dead and Dark Entries.

If you like Gothic music then these tracks MUST be in your collection - if only these guys could have stayed together longer the whole face of gothic music could have been different (and probably better).

4.0 out of 5 stars The Best of Bauhaus - We 'Double Dare' you to listen, 15 Jan 2002
By A Customer
Bauhaus' arrival in 1979 hailed the beginning of experimental goth rock, even though their music was never really intended for the shoegazing fraternity which was to follow. This worthy and well-packaged compilation takes us through a brilliantly unique musical maelstrom, covering their truly pioneering ouput between 1979 and 1985.

Aside from the omission of the extremley creepy Stigma Martyr, this is generally an excellent collection of their finest moments. This also demonstrates how vastly diverse their music could be, from the minimalist gothic epic of Bela Lugosi's Dead (one of the longest single releases of all time) to what can only be described as a 'pop' single with the excellent Kick In The Eye. Other highlights include the brilliantly obscure Terror Couple Kill Colonel, the uplifting Spirit and their last single, The Sanity Asassain, which manifested a more mainstream sound and perhaps partly-resulted in their demise soon after (singer/songwriter Peter Murphy's solo-career is also worth following).

Beggar's Banquet Records may well have questioned the name of the band (named after a German architectural style based on brutal modernist concrete designs) but their music certainly fitted the name - brutal, brooding but never dull. At the time of their arrival they were regarded as experimental art rock goths and a tuneless, second-rate Cure or Siouxie. How wrong they were.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Don't back away yet, from destinations set", 27 May 2002
By A Customer
If you're like me, one of the things most likely to impress
upon you from this disc is just how seamlessly the band members'
skills and talents interweave into a perfect, flawless whole.
The first track "Double Dare" for instance starts with
ominous, relentless bass, shimmering guitar (both are pure
electricity) and chaotic pummeling drums that constantly
waver from left speaker to right. Pete Murphy's vocals complete
the circle with urgency and no time for second best, in
his rant against conformity.
Bauhaus create an ominous and electric mood that defies
complacency and celebrates defiance. Other classic tracks
include "Sanity Assassin", "She's In Parties", "Dark Entries"
as well as an inspiring cover of Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust".
And of course, the masterpiece "Bela Lugosi's Dead" -
the tapping drums, dread inspiring bass and wavering
yet constant guitar have surely passed into legend and
Pete's delivery simultantenously evokes sympathy, dread and regret. A
startling debut single and an all time masterpiece.
Of course a predilection for gothic imagery and punk
abandon is desirable but whatever your prefernce, when you
discuss tight, perfectly formed and executed bands, Bauhaus
should definetly be on your list.
