Product Description

CD Description

A comprehensive collection of Jones' post-disco work, most of it recorded between 1980 and 1982 in Nassau, Bahamas, with a truly remarkable studio band, including the legendary reggae rhythm team of Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare, alongwith Marianne Faithful collaborator Barry Reynolds on guitar. The songs--which run the gamut from Smokey Robinson to Chrissie Hynde to Johnny Cash--are generally arranged in an innovative, ahead-of-their-time way (echoey yet spare, with lots of deep bass) that owes a bit to dub and in any case provides a perfect backdrop for Jones' Queen of the Undead vocals.

5.0 out of 5 stars undervalued, 25 May 2001
By A Customer
I've always loved Grace's music. During the early 80s she hooked up with the great rhythm section of Sly and Robbie, and made her trilogy of superb Island albums: "Warm Leatherette", "Nightclubbing", and "Living My life". They were the epitome of chic mainstream funk, and most of them are represented on this double release. There's no pretense with this stuff: Grace found a groove and stuck with it, but these recordings were very well made and still sound good. Not only do we get the highlights of the albums, but extended mixes and unreleased tracks, most of which are worthy of inclusion (especially the dub of "Private Life"). An added sweetener is the inclusion of Grace's possibly finest moment, "Slave to the Rhythm". A fine collection, guaranteed to please like an ice cream parfait on a warm day.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Grace - one star lost for some omissions, 27 April 2006

This is the CD I wanted...this is the best of Grace Jones. Forget her dizzy disco phase that preceded, and forget her sell out mainstream phase that followed - here we have all the best tracks from Grace Jones' collaborations with Sly and Robbie, where she produced her most dynamic, sensual and explosive music. Just listen to that tight-as-a-drum production on tracks like "Walking in the Rain", "Private Life" and "My Jamaican Guy", Grace's music has never been better.

I was also really pleased to see that this CD has given us the long versions of many of the tracks - previously only available on the cassette versions of the original LP's. But they cruelly decided against including the 12" of "Walking in the Rain" - probably because the vocal part was quite messed up on the 12" single - but it would have made a fine extra, as it really showcases the superb instrumentation, like the long versions of "Private Life" and "Love is the Drug" do. But conversely, as this is a double album, they could have really given us more of the thre album tracks instead of duplicating tracks with dub versions, and I really miss two gorgeous slow tracks called "Bullshit" and "Inspiration" that soooo belong on this collection, but have been left off to make way for stuff I could have easily done without, like the two wretched "bonus tracks" "Ring of Fire" and "Man About the House" - they are awful, tin pot demos - plus there was no need for a version of "Slave to the Rhythm", which is not from this era anyway.

I would honestly recommend buying all three of the CDs of "Warm Leatherette", "Living My Life" and "Nightclubbing" if you want all the Compass Point tracks, due to the sad omission of a few good songs on here. But then you wouldn't get all the long versions on this collection. Sadly there's never just one simple solution in cases like these, is there?

5.0 out of 5 stars this music has not aged at all, 17 May 2002
By David Spanswick (Brighton United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

It seems incredible to think that this music is already twenty years old. Grace gloried in the cutting age of pre hip hop music and married it to "gaydisco" then found Sly and Robbie and the magic that is found on this double album was made.
This is true value for money as well as essential archive material that returns directly to the "Age of Innocence" of the early 80's
Check out the notes too which are thorough, informative and bound to be of interest to any pop historian

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!
Apart from an annoying number of back to back versions of the same songs, this is a fabulous double CD.
