3.0 out of 5 stars For fans and completists only, 7 Dec 2003

(REAL NAME)
"This album uses overdubs - deal with it." So spakes Devin Townsend and to be honest, this is about as close as you can get to being at an SYL concert without the concerns of having your ears aurally sandpapered off your head by the sheer brutal force of nature that is Strapping Young Lad.

"No Sleep.." showcases live variations (with obligatory off the cuff remarks) of two tracks from their first album, "Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing", four from their second album, "City", and their live-only track, "Far Beyond Metal" which is the highlight of the album - an exercise in lunacy that comes off remarkably well, even with overdubs. Finally, we get two studio tracks culled from miscellaneous compilations that are not much to write home about.

As albums go, this isn't the best Strapping album by a long way. It's well produced, as ever, by Devin Townsend, but only half an hour long? What happened to the other half of the gig?

5.0 out of 5 stars Groovy, baby., 20 Sep 2000
By A Customer
It is amazing just to hear these songs live as they are incredibly well performed. The band themselves admit that they use overdubs, but when it's on a live album as good as this you can't really complain. After the initial shock of the barber shop quartet-style intro to 'Velvet Kevorkian' (What else can you expect from Devin Townsend) and how good the songs sound live, the songs themselves are pretty much the same as the album versions, but you do get two funky bonus tracks 'Japan' and 'Centipede' that were only previously available on the Japanese version of City. Some live versions of tracks such as 'Detox', 'Underneath The Waves' or 'Satan's Ice Cream Truck' would have been nice, as the album is quite short, but 'Far Beyond Metal' with it's typically silly Devin intro just about makes up for it. All in all, a must for any SYL fan. Well worth it. Oh yes, and Gene Hoglan is a god.
