Just a warning for anyone who takes the CD cover literally: while the LP version of this record was a double containing ALL the tracks from 'Signing Off', this CD loses 5 tracks: the instrumentals '12 Bar','Adella','25%' and 'Reefer Madness' and the song 'Little By Little'.

This is a shame as the instrumentals are arguably preferable to the slightly dull Randy Newman and Billie Holliday covers, while 'Little By Little' is fantastic, with its apocalyptic lyrics a similar fusion of biblical/socialist rhetoric to those on Max Romeo's 'Revolution Time' LP. MI5 were certainly taking notice...

I'm not completely sure at this point whether 'Dream A Lie' and 'Earth Dies Screaming' are available elsewhere in this form, but I would guess that the versions on the 'Best Of UB40' album are edits, whereas these are the full (12") versions. I do know that the version of 'My Way Of Thinking' here (as on the original double LP) is only an edit (presumably from the 7") which is again a great shame as the 12" version is stunning and doesn't seem to be available on CD.

So I had to drop a star for the omissions, but this is some of the best UB40 stuff; as with 'Present Arms' etc this LP demonstrates that they had a great roots sound in the early days which unfortunately, like Aswad and others, they dropped in the late 80's for commercial pop-reggae, which can never have the same impact.

In 1986 I purchased (in the U.S.) the vinyl of this CD. It was titled "The Singles". Fast forward 23 years, and this is the only digital recording I can find of "The Earth Dies Screaming" and "Dream a Lie". The tracks on this CD mirror the LP "The Singles" on DEP Records exactly. The LP was an English import when I bought it, as is this CD. I eagerly await it's arrival to my Missouri doorstep!
