Product Description

CD Description
Back in the early months of 1992, alternative rock was exploding. Radio and MTV had finally fully embraced the oft-dismissed genre, but the bands that were receiving most of the airplay were writing straightforward, raw punk-pop songs. After the breakup of Jane's Addiction, another Los Angeles band, Tool, satisfied fans looking for progressive art-rock withan alternative edge. Issued in March of 1992, Tool's debut six-track OPIATE EP showed that the new band was creating its own highly original sound.
Half of the songs stretched over the four-minute mark, which signaled the epic-songwriting direction the band would explore further on such future releases as 1993's UNDERTOW and 1996's AENIMA. While the compositions on the debut aren't as developed as those on the aforementioned albums, OPIATE remains a gripping listen. Four studio tracks are featured ("Sweat", "Hush", "Part of Me", and the title track), as well as a pair of tracks recorded live at the Jello Loft in Hollywood, California, on New Year'sEve of 1991 ("Cold and Ugly", "Jerk Off"). Most of Tool's now instantly recognisable musical traits, like Maynard JamesKeenan's perturbed singing and guitarist Adam Jones' repetitive guitar riffs, were already noticeable on OPIATE.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great, 19 Dec 2000
This is Tool's debut release. It is a good mini album, featuring a hidden track. That said, do not expect it to sound like 'Undertow' or 'Aenima', because it doesn't. It sounds the way it does, not specifically because Tool dramatically changed their musical direction after this release, but because they decided to put their 'punkiest' songs on it. It is direct, loud and lacks the depth and dynamism of their subsequent releases. But that doesn't invalidate it, not by a long shot. These songs are great, and the band still play some of them live, which shows their attitude towards the release. There is a tendency to think of it as the 'other' Tool album, and to file it away under 'completists'. But this album is more than valid in its own right and is a great rock document. If you listen to their other material and then listen to this you will find yourself getting an amazing insight into the workings of 4 minds that are unlike any you are likely to meet in the course of your average day (unless of course your name is Justin Chancellor!).

Don't buy it first, but if you like the other Tool albums, don't be put off by what you read about this one. It rocks and it's hot and it's Tool!

5.0 out of 5 stars showing me where it all began...., 15 Sep 2001
If you are new to Tool then this wont be anything like your'e expecting. This is when they were starting out and when released caused them to be sectioned off as anohter new grunge band, nothing could prepare us for what they were going to become, but here they were at the start full of rage and ideas. Maynard hadn't developed the voice he has today, but the power he got from it was amazing - witness the anger in "Hush" and "Part of Me", the live songs as well hinted at how good this band were, considering those song were recording at a friends party. "Jerk -Off" is a song to scare you parents with and the hiddent track highlighted their bizzare side. A fantastic record thats a must for ay tool fan

5.0 out of 5 stars TOOL RULE!, 7 Sep 2003
This review is from: Opiate (Audio CD)
This is by far my favorite tool album because every song sounds like its the first time youve heard it every time you play it!
All the tracks are amazing for all diffrent reasons i recomend this to bass players because it has extreamly cool bass lines on all the songs. Also Danny does amazing druming which will blow you ears off, and also there are little comedy bits at the end of some of the songs, and the secret track is funny as hell burning fat, whilst cooking! This is the heaviest of all the albums and is the most original!
