Product Description

From Amazon.com

The mightiest of late-'80s Manchester ensembles had the world at its feet before entering the long, dark tunnel of litigation. This tidy compilation begins with a few archival indie singles then strides into the glorious but fleeting period that produced gems like "I Wanna Be Adored," "Waterfall," and "Fools Gold." --Jeff Bateman

CD Description

The title of THE COMPLETE STONE ROSES is not entirely accurate. The disc is one of the settlements resulting from the longstanding legal battles between the Manchester band and its former label, Silvertone Records. THE COMPLETE collects the singles from the Roses' classic first album, 1989's THE STONE ROSES, along with such excellent, pre-and-post-album singles as "Made of Stone" and the hypnotic nine-minute groove anthem "Fools Gold" and a handful of early recordings made in the mid-'80s with the late Martin Hannett. The latter are especially intriguing, making clear the previously hidden influence earlier Hannett-produced Manchester bands like New Order and A Certain Ratio had on the Stone Roses' more '60s-influenced and guitar-oriented sound. THE COMPLETE is an interesting compilation for fans and newcomers alike.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay for people who just wanna know what they sounded like., 3 Feb 2000
By A Customer
This was the first Stone Roses CD I bought. At the time I had borrowed Turns Into Stone off my friend, and I thought that this would be the perfect album, because it contained all the songs off Turns Into Stone except Simone (which wasn't very good anyway). But then you find that the recordings of Fools Gold and Elephant Stone aren't the same, or that it misses songs like Bye Bye Badman and This Is The One. Also, the disc doesn't contain any songs from The Second Coming, and there is no John Squire artwork. The Roses themselves didn't even recieve any money from sales of this album. If you really want to see and hear what the Stone Roses were really about, you should buy The Stone Roses - Anniversary Edition, Second Coming, Turns Into Stone, Garage Flowers and Sally Cinnamon EP. But if you just want to get a feel for their sound, this will do.

1.0 out of 5 stars Substandard cash in. Avoid., 26 Jul 2002
Though, in my opinion, the Stone Roses were one of the greatest bands to have ever existed this compilation is an insult to their name. Piss poor version of Waterfall, the 4 minute edit of Fools Gold, One Love and Somethings Burning and only the first half of I am the Resurrection make this album a shameful cash in on the part of Silvertone.
Buy Turns into Stone for the B sides and non-album singles while Sally Cinnamon and its associated B sides are cosntantly rereleased. Spare yourself the shame of having this in your record collection and get the proper records.

1.0 out of 5 stars Complete? Far from it, 7 Oct 2004
By A Customer
I recommend you do not buy this compilation. Many of the tunes on this 'best of' effort appear to be inferior versions of the many classics that made this band so great in their day.

For 'The Complete' Stone Roses experience simply buy 'Stone Roses' and 'Turns Into Stone'.

Do it. Do it now. If you haven't discovered the Stone Roses yet then you owe it to yourself.
