Siouxse & the Banshees were never afraid to experiment withother musical styles while using their trademark gothic sound as a starting point, as heard throughout their 1981 release, JUJU. Their previous release, KALEIDOSCOPE, saw the bandletting synthesizer seep into their ethereal sound, and on JUJU, experiment with Middle Eastern and psychedelic sounds with a more direct (almost traditional) rock approach. Over the course of most of their recordings, Siouxse & the Banshees either met or topped their previous releases, and JUJU more than delivers on the promise of their previous work, resulting in arguably the group's (and one of goth rock's) finest album ever. Siouxse never lets the intensity dim down on such highlights as the album opening "Spellbound", "Arabian Knights", "Halloween", "Night Shift", and "Voodoo Dolly". Elements of JUJU can be directly sampled in the early work of aband that would bring alternative rock to the masses by theearly 90's - devout Siouxse & the Banshees disciples Jane'sAddiction.

Forget all those useless tags [punk, goth, etc] that people always use when trying to pigeon-hole this band. The beauty of the group is that they constantly reinvented themselves musically and image wise without ever losing their unique spirit and essence. Juju is a near perfect offering and ranks alonside Kaleidoscope and Peepshow as ,in my opinion,one of their best incarnations. Here you have exquisite guitars, thumping drums, moody atmospherics and playfully dark lyrics. Add to this Siouxsie's key defying,commanding voice [crooning, howling, whispering] and you've got the stuff of [bad] dreams. Each track is a gem in its own right, and put together make a very satisfying whole. Halloween, Nightshift and Voodoo Dolly are standout classics, and Arabian Knights is my favourite single of all times. Siouxsie and The Banshees in tip top form.

This cd shows sioux's enormous talent at creating dark and spine tingling words and melodies. light the candles and joss-sticks and, lie back and enjoy the catharsis. I defy you not to be moved. Fantastic, genius need I say more. if you only have one Sioux lp in your collection, then this should be it, but having them all would be better & I guarantee you will play nothing else. What took you so long?

I have always loved Siouxsie and the Banshees, they were my favourite band for a long time, but I had not played anything by them for many years. So coming back to JuJu reminded me just how incredible they were at the time and while it is 'of it's time', JuJu sounds as great now as it did back in 1981. Definately the best album The Banshees made. If you only have 1 Banshees CD in your collection, make it this one. Forget the goth label, they may have accidentally created the goth scene, bu they were never a goth band.
