5.0 out of 5 stars Sabbat's masterpiece!, 24 April 2003
I first got this album on a tape from a friend without any information on the album, not even any song titles! Maybe this is the best way to listen to something, without any prejudices, as this is simply a fantastic thrash metal album! Of course most of the great thrash bands are/were American. But with this album Sabbat showed that Britain could come up with something to equal and better it! This album is undeniably British and so is certainly far more atmospheric then any other US thrash album that you will hear. The songs are all fantastically constructed catchy masterpieces, that will have your toe tapping and your head banging in no time at all. The album is also wonderously heavy with fantastic solos from Andy Sneap (he of producer fame now). However possibly even better than the music are the intelligent, passionate, original and superb lyrics of Martin Walkyier the vocalist. They truely are fantastic and are delivered in a rasping style that some may not like, but personally I think are great, and they are very intelligble too.
To start the album off there is a 2 minute intro of various noises, which eventually finish with "So it is done" being spoken, then you are propelled head first into the first track proper "A Cautionary Tale". This is a great fast thrash tune, with a sing a long chorus. The next track "Housanna In Excelsius" is much the same really. Another 4 minute catchy fast track. Great Stuff! Next up is the slightly more complicated and Longer "Behind The Crooked Cross" (Not to be confused with the Slayer track of the same name released in the same year ironically enough on "South Of Heaven"). The lyrics deal with Racism and Nazism, and are NOT exounding their positives! "Horned Is The Hunter" is the Epic track for this album. 8 minutes long and brilliant with it. "I For An Eye" is next up, with an incredibly catchy drum opening which you will be tapping on to your desk (or exam table! ;)) for weeks to come. Then comes the wonderful "For Those Who Died". This is a great one to bang your head to, and certainly goes down well live. Next track "A Dead Mans Robe" slows the albums down a little and is an almost instrumental (with just one line of lyrics spoken). Finally we have the excellent "The Church Bizarre" (Nice pun!) which closes off the album in fine style. Another great fast heavy song to bang yourhead to with classy solo's. Also at the end of this song it segues into what can only be described as a church group singing 'Hallejuh' with folky quitars & a tambourine before finishing off with a "Praise The Lord" to which there is a response of a dark & dismissive laugh, followed by the bolting of (hell's?) gate! All in all the Best British Thrash albums from the 80's. With briliiant songs & wonderful lyrics. Buy this if you can, if deserves to be in any Metalhead's collection!
