This album was one of my mothers favourites on the original vinyl. As a youngster into my Bowie,Slade and T.Rex I would not have admitted that I liked this.
Over the years though I have had to admit that Tom had a voice to be envied and on this early recording it never sounded better, in my opinion. So when I came accross it on CD in my 40's I had to buy it! My old mum in her 90's now has it on her MP3 player that I loaded with this along with other of her favourites. When I first gave it to her she was taken back 40 years to when she used to do the ironing listening to her records. I knew the pleasure she used to get was now back again, she was smiling as though a long lost relative had just walked in.

As for me? I play this every now and again in between my Led Zep and Pink Floyd and for a while its not Tom, but me with the voice as I sing the words to the ballads about Laura, Annaleah and Delilah of course. I'm immersed in the beauty of "One Day Soon" and "Lingering On". I'm dragging my poor wife from pillar to post in "My Elusive Dreams", and by the time I get to "Take Me" I am the man who gets underwear thrown at him! Then as the underpants hit me I hear : "how much longer are you going to be in the bath?...." Then it's back to reality.
Oh if only I'd had a voice like Tom's, if only..... Well if I did, then I'd have a job making an album as good as this.It takes the listener on an emotional rollercoaster from the pulsating high of "You Can't Stop Love" to the despair found in "Make This Heart Of Mine Smile Again","Just Out Of Reach","Only A Fool Breaks His Own Heart" and "Why Can't I Cry?".
It's brilliant, proving that yes, Mums do know best!

without doubt.this is country music the
way it should be sung.buy this lp sit back
and listen to tom at his very best.

Originally released about ten or twelve years earlier, this CD was re-packaged in 2011 as a set (Along came Jones, Atomic, Green green grass of home, Delilah) as Tom Jones X 4, with each CD in its own cardboard case but no liner notes or credits beyond the actual track listings.

It seems that the classic title track was the only single from this album, which is somewhat mellower tan his early music of the mid-sixties, but no less brilliant for that. Following the success of Green, green grass of home, there are some country songs here including Laura what's he got that I ain't got (a number one country hit, eventually covered by Kenny Rogers who also had a top 20 country hit with it; his version appeared on his eponymous 1977 album that also included Lucille and his cover of Green, green grass of home), Just out of reach (originally recorded in the fifties by Bonnie Lou, and often covered since) and My elusive dreams (a country hit as a duet by David Houston and Tammy Wynette). Tom's versions are well up to the standard that I expect from him, but there.

Elsewhere, I particularly like You can't stop love, in which Tom picks up the tempo a little. The title track (adopted by Stoke City fans as their anthem) is the track that everybody knows, but it isn't typical of the album. If you enjoy excellent pop and country ballads, superbly performed, this could be just what you are looking for.

I had been asked by a relative to search for this album on CD. She had had this originally on Vinyl and it had always been her favorite. I had spent some considerable time trying to find it but to no avail. In fact I had forgotten all about it. Recently she asked me again and so I went back to searching. I have to be honest I did not immediately think of Amazon as I knew it would not be available in the UK as a new item. However I did go to Amazon to check the Record Label and the label, Decca and the ASIN code to see if that would throw up any results. It was at this point I noticed that there was a secondhand supply on Amazon! I took a risk and an ordered a "Mint" copy from dutchtoni (TONI MUSIC LIMITED (NETHERLANDS))The CD was received in good time and in perfect order, and my relative was ecstatic, it is, once again, her favorite album and has made me a hero! Thanks dutchtoni you're a star!
