4.0 out of 5 stars Do your homework!, 15 Nov 1999

Who would ever have thought it? This em from the boogie blues man is funky as anything from the seventies. He still uses a low drawl and low-fi blues guitar but his characteristic style boogie has evolved into a funk-groove rediscovered in the 1990's. Check out Homework and the scratch, you'll see a few things you recognise from latter day artists.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cool funk from the grandmaster of boogie!, 7 Oct 1999
By A Customer
John Lee is better known for grumbling over a low-fi guitar, well, he's still doing that but with a funky 70's twinge. This is how the blues should be when you need something a bit more jolly. You can hear how he influenced such modern day rock stars as Lenny Kravitz who was obviously inspired by this blues-funk sound. If you're a JLH purist then maybe it's not for you, but I dare anyone to listen and not like it a little bit.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Detroit Lion Do The Funky Blues Walk!, 21 Oct 2008
When I first read about this album I couldn't wait to get hold of it. Johnnie Lee goes funky?!!
Damn. I like the sound of that!
He's always had that groove thing going and a voice that could work with pretty much anything.

It's hard to find information about this album and the liner notes doesn't say anything about the band.
There is a guest vocalist on a couple of tracks that sound A LOT like Joe Cocker,
or Joe Cocker pissed to his heels!
On the last track you can hear Hooker laughing in the background, when the other guy
tries to sing something, and it sounds as if he is too drunk to be awake!

You'll find 3 really fat tracks on the album; "Make it funky" - the purest funk track on the album, "713 Blues/714 Blues", a hard and greasy cooker and a groovy rendition of "Bluebird."
By the way, it's only 9 songs on this album, not 12 as it says in the track listings. 713 Blues/714 Blues is one
recording split in two, and the last 3 songs listed are a rather strange medley, badly put togheter. That's a shame, because on part b)Nothin' but the best, the horns and Hooker have hit a baaad groove.

5 stars is too generous, but it's a solid four star album, and I give it an extra star just for
finding out about this lost gem, and maybe attract the attention of others!
