Product Description

CD Description

The long-standing acrimony between Ritchie Blackmore and Ian Gillan is no secret and by 1989, Gillan had left Deep Purple for the second time. By 1993, Gillan came aboard once again to cut THE BATTLE RAGES ON and soon after Deep Purple toured Europe in support of it. COME HELL OR HIGH WATER is the only official live document of this ill-fated tour (Blackmore left Purple as the band was ready to go into the Japanese leg of the tour).
Despite all the tension that must have been going on off-stage, Deep Purple funneled this aggression into these German and English performances. These nine songs are drawn from the past three decades and include newer epics such as the sweeping "Anya" and the driving "Twist in the Tale", along with the haunting title track of the band's 1984 comeback album, PERFECT STRANGERS. Other highlights include the longtime concert favourite "Black Night", which goes back to the band's classic LIVE IN JAPAN album and a 10-minute-plus version of Deep Purple's signature tune, "Smoke onthe Water", complete with audience call-and-response.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blackmore finds rage and focus together for dp sign off, 6 Feb 2001
By A Customer
This is a fitting last release for the Mk II (or should that be 2c) lineup, the flair, passion and fury that set the classic early seventies albums apart from any other sequence by a single band are captured again as Blackmore's working relationship with the rest of the band comes to an end. His playing captured on this disc is sharp and driven in a way that had been lacking in many of the live performances in the years coming up to this and Gillan's voice is also on fine form. The rest of the band - ever immaculate - are fired by their performances to make this a special album for Deep purple fan's.

The rarely performed country spoof Anyone's Daughter is included here alongide magnificent performance of A Twist in the Tail and Perfect Strangers - the old standards are also presented well. The mix makes more of Lord's organ play than most Purple live material and does so to good advantage. If forced to pick one live disc from the reunion era this is the one to go for.

4.0 out of 5 stars Blackmore bows out with awesome sound, 19 Dec 2000
One big reason to get this livealbum is the teriffic soundquality, and also the fact that Ritchie Blackmore left shortly after these conserts took place. To hear Blackmore's playing in "Anya", "Child in time" and "Speed king" is worth the price alone. Promise!! The tension of old days are there again, and all for the better. The big fault is that "The battle rages on" is missing, since this baby is one great live-number.

4.0 out of 5 stars WHERE'S BATTLE RAGES ON!!!!!, 5 Jan 2005
This is a great Purple live album, but where is the Battle Rages on, considering that was the album promoted for this tour it seems stupid that it is not on this cd, I've had to record it from the DVD to add to my minidisc complication, and even on the dvd the intro is cut (or played in the background during an interview).
RE-RELEASE WITH BATTLE RAGES ON AS BONUS TRACK NOW!!!

Even so, The best live Purple album from the nineties, Blackmore/Lord are on top form!
